Ingredients

  • 14 oz firm tofu pressed and cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce or coconut aminos
  • 1 tsp chili powder adjust to taste
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika Hungarian or Spanish
  • 1 tsp garlic powder for extra flavor
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil for aroma and richness
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice brightens the flavor

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper or silicone mat
  • Mixing bowls
  • spatula or tongs
  • Measuring spoons and cups

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (392°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. Drain the tofu and press out excess moisture for at least 15 minutes, then cut into 1-inch cubes.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine soy sauce, chili powder, smoked paprika, garlic powder, sesame oil, and lemon juice to create a flavorful marinade.
  4. Toss the tofu cubes gently in the marinade, ensuring each piece is coated evenly. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight for deeper flavor.
  5. Spread the marinated tofu evenly on the prepared baking sheet, making sure the pieces are not crowded to allow crisping.
  6. Bake the tofu for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until edges are golden brown and crispy, and you can smell the smoky spices.
  7. Remove the tofu from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes, which helps the crispiness settle and flavors to deepen.
  8. Serve the crispy, smoky tofu over rice or greens, garnished with fresh herbs or a squeeze of lemon for extra brightness.

Notes

For an even crispier texture, ensure you press out as much moisture as possible from the tofu before marinating. Adjust spice levels to suit your heat preference. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days and reheated in a hot oven for best results.
